New in Mexico City? Tips to breathe easy at high altitudes

Moving into a new country is not always easy: time switch, climate, food and especially altitude can alter anyone.

Our city is located in Valley of Mexico (Valle de México), a large gorge in the high plateaus in the center of the country, at an altitude of 2,240 meters, which can cause discomfort to newcomers. The aches caused by the height are varied, because not everyone is affected the same way. A lot may not experience any change at all and others might feel sick. Some of the symptoms of altitude sickness are the following: – Lightheadedness  – Intense headache  – Nausea and vomiting  – Insomnia  – Fatigue and general exhaustion  – Tachycardia  – Difficulty breathing

If you have recently moved to Mexico City and are suffering from any of the above, there are several ways to lessen the pain while you gradually adjust to your new destination.

The best way to cope with all this is to adapt. It is advisable to stay calm in order not to get agitated, as well as not making great physical efforts during the first days of your arrival.

It is very important that you rest as much as you can, as this will help your body to comply better.

Performing breathing exercises is also very useful to avoid dyspnea.

Drinking a lot of water vital, since a well-hydrated body will always work properly.

Remember not to overeat or have any spicy or heavy food, especially if Mexican dishes are new to you as they might give you an upset stomach. It will be much better if you stick to lighter meals high in fruits and vegetables at the beginning.

But above all, keep in mind that all the annoyance will eventually pass and you will be able to eat our delicious cuisine, feel healthy and enjoy your stay.
